END OF SEASON GIFFORD MINI GOBLINS

The Haddington Mini Tournament on Sunday the 4th May brings the curtain down on our rugby for this season. Next season begins on Sunday the 31st of August.

All the coaches are very pleased with the improvements everyone is making and I know Derek is very proud of “his” P7 squad, especially after their successful trip to Wales. We wish them all the best in their endeavours in “senior” rugby and look forward to seeing some of them playing for Scotland in the future. Even if they don’t, they should continue to enjoy their rugby – it is a great game for all abilities, shapes and sizes and you will make many great friends through the game.

Best wishes from Adam, Derek, Colin, Mike, Andy, Stuart, Alastair and Charlie.

Remember Gifford Kwik Cricket starts at the Bleachfield on Sunday 11th May also at 10:15.

Don’t forget to go along and support Scotland at the Emirates Airline Edinburgh Sevens at Murrayfield on 31 May to 1 June, the final event in the 2007/08 IRB Sevens World Series. www.edinburgh7s.com/

First Ever Gifford Mini Goblins Rugby Tour a Huge Success

In 2006 the Gifford Mini Goblins Rugby Club celebrated its 25th birthday and held several fund raising events to mark the occasion. One of the results of that activity was the Club’s first ever tour with a team of Primary Sevens going to the rugby heartlands of South Wales.

The Primary Seven team was the largest group of boys that had come all the way through the club and had performed extremely well in matches and tournaments.

So it was with some trepidation and lots of excitement that 12 children and 14 adults flew south on Friday 4th January 2008 to begin their adventure. The tour started in Cardiff with a visit to the magnificent Millennium Stadium which had everyone in awe.

Thanks to Edinburgh Rugby’s generosity the touring party all had tickets to see Edinburgh play the Cardiff Blues on Friday night. Although a small contingent they were very vocal and cheered Edinburgh on to a fantastic victory winning by one point thanks to a Phil Godman drop goal in the dying minutes of the match. The tour had got off to a great start.

The following day saw an early start as the party left the comfort of the Youth Hostel and walked to the nearest train station which took them to Caerphilly where they were met by our hosts for the weekend. It was quickly established that Caerphilly Rugby Club shared all the same values as the Gifford Mini Goblins which augured well for the next two days.

The match on Saturday was preceded with a warm-up training session that allowed both sets of players to get to know each other better. Indeed given the numbers, Caerphilly loaned the Goblins four of their players to even up the teams and to get everyone playing.

The match was played in a wonderfully competitive atmosphere where the Goblins managed a famous victory assisted by their Caerphilly loans who were quite happy to take on their usual team mates.

At the side of the pitch both sets of supporters got to know each other as well which was made very easy by the friendly reception that was extended to everyone. The mums in particular got on very well and there was already talk of reunions by the end of the weekend!

After the success on the pitch the party celebrated with a trip to the local bowling centre and then it was back into Cardiff for a slap up meal at China China where you can eat as much as you want – well the boys had earned it after all.

The Sunday fixture was an even greater event for the Goblins as a fifteen aside match was organised to be played on the full sized Caerphilly Rugby Club pitch – a first for many of the boys. Before kick off however another warm up session took place with both teams working together having to got to know each other the previous day. The “Caerphilly Goblins” were just as happy to stay with what they hoped would again be the winning team. The only challenge was for the referee as both teams were in green tops!

Again the match was a terrific contest played in the very best spirit with great skill and determination being shown by both teams. While the Goblins went into half time a try ahead, Caerphilly came back strongly in the second half and scored twice to win the game.

On this occasion however there were no disappointed boys as both teams had thoroughly enjoyed the match as had the supporters. Particular mention must be given to John Taviner who refereed both games and is President for Youth Rugby for Caerphilly Rugby Club and did a brilliant job and brought out the best in both sets of players.

Afterwards in the clubhouse Caerphilly presented all the players with a souvenir tie, mug and a medal as well as ties and pennants to Adam White and Derek Smith for the Goblins. In return the Goblins presented a beautiful hand made clock and mirror (made by one of the players parents) to celebrate the fixture. In addition the party made a cash donation from the parents to go toward the Caerphilly Mini Rugby Club tour to Ireland later in the year as way of a thank you for all the kindness they had shown including laundering the teams kit overnight!

This ended what was judged by all to be a hugely successful tour and while this was the first it certainly would not be the last.

TRY AGAIN FUNDAY – 10:15 SUNDAY 30 DECEMBER

Instead of normal training, we are meeting at the Bleachfield at 10:15 on Sunday the 30th of December for some fun. Everybody is welcome to join in, dads, mums, brothers, sisters, friends and any former Goblins out there. There might even be football and of course some rugby as well.

Afterwards if the weather is kind we hope to have some drinks and things on the wall. Everyone should bring a little something. If the weather is not good and we have to call off we will try again the following Sunday, the 6th.

All Goblins are scheduled to play against Forrester and Dalkeith at Dalkeith Rugby Club on Sunday 28th October. We should aim to be there (changed) at 10.30. Dalkeith RFC clubhouse is between the town centre and Eskbank Toll.

DIRECTIONS TO DALKEITH RUGBY CLUB:-
Head for Pencaitland on the B6355. When you get to the Pencaitland X-roads take the A6093 (left through Pencaitland) to Dalkeith. When you reach the A68 turn right (take care) to Dalkeith. When you enter Dalkeith head straight over the large roundabout then mini-roundabout and continue downhill and over the Esk Bridge, passed the school and then take the left fork. Pass the Midlothian Council Offices, to some traffic lights (centre of Dalkeith). Turn left towards Bonnyrigg. The rugby pitches are on your left (in the public park) just after the church. The clubhouse is on your right opposite the public park.

I often find it difficult to park on the main road as well as being difficult with children, therefore continue towards Bonnyrigg (Eskbank), passed the clubhouse and the next church then turn first left into Waverley Road and first left again into Park Road and continue to the end and park. This is a much quieter and safer road.

MATCH INFORMATION AND DIRECTIONS TO DALKEITH RFC

The Club has arranged some games with Dalkeith RFC mini section at 11:00 am on Sunday 29th October at Dalkeith Rugby Club.

Please remember that the clocks go back 1 hour on the night of Saturday the 28th

For those that wish, we will be leaving Gifford at 10:00 aiming to be there changed for about 10:30. Alternatively you may wish to make your own way there. Please phone Colin Baird on 01620 810812 to let him know if you are unavailable or require a lift.

MORE MINI GOBLINS MAKE THE GRADE

Following on from last year's news that former Goblin Kern Boyd had been selected for the Scotland Under 18 Team, two other ex mini Goblin players are beginning to make their mark.

Gifford local Robert Watt has been selected for the Edinburgh Under 16 squad. Rab plays prop for Haddington Colts and the Falcons. He is at school at Knox Academy.

Sam Hunt has also been selected for the Under 16 squad. Sam, who now plays his rugby for Fettes Colege, plays scrum half.
